Orange Beach's tree rules cover more than cutting down

Orange Beach protects trees under Article 16 of its Zoning Ordinance, and its rules reach beyond removal. According to the city's Article 16 quick-reference sheet, ordinance and fee schedule (last verified 2026-10-18):

  • A permit from the Community Development Department is required before anyone cuts, removes or damages a protected or heritage tree on private property or road right-of-way, unless an exemption applies.
  • The sheet defines protected trees by size and type: redbuds and dogwoods of 4 inches or more, longleaf pines of 18 inches or more, and most other trees of 6 inches or more, with some listed exceptions such as certain invasive species.
  • A heritage tree is a healthy protected tree of 30 inches or more (or an equivalent circumference).
  • A tree survey showing protected trees' species, locations and sizes must be submitted with the application.
  • The ordinance (Art. 16 §16.08) also covers trimming: trimming a protected tree needs a permit unless an exemption applies.
  • The ordinance gives the city 15 working days to act on a completed application.
  • The city's fee schedule (version 2026.03) lists $25 plus $5 per tree for a one- or two-family dwelling tree-removal permit. Confirm current fees with the city.

Check with the city before trimming or removing a mature tree. Official sources: the city's Article 16 quick reference, the Article 16 ordinance (PDF), the permit fee schedule and Permit Portal.
